Ok, I may have been a little angry in my last entry. The movement the captain saw in the electrical storm was it arcing out only fifty miles from the ship. Granted that’s a long way off, but in space that’s just a few inches. One of the science teams believes that our ship is giving off enough electrical charge the possibly attract a lightning bolt. Granted this usually wouldn’t be a big deal except for the fact that Kano and I know that these lightning bolts are a bit bigger than the ones back home.

The captain is authorizing the science teams to send out ten observation units into the storm. They’re taking extreme care in insulating the observation pods or drones, I’m not sure for the actual term. This does raise a small problem though. We can’t call back Little Wingdings and those ten observers are defintally going to find it out there. I liked this job too. Well it’s not like I can get fired any time soon. Though I do expect some brig time. This was just supposed to be a fun little science experiment too.

Bright side, maybe Kano will get to work with the science teams like he always wanted to. Dude’s young, but he’s too good to be stuck as a junior technician. Besides, his findings will probably help out the scientists a lot. Either that or he’ll be down in the brig with me. Maki’s disappeared again, probably figures it’s best not to have her name anywhere near this.

Well, no use worrying.

I should not be awake. An hour ago the captain wakes me because he saw something in the electrical storm. Not believing that that is impossible and the only thing in there is charred space rock, and Wingdings, he’s making me stop the ship. The whole bloody ship, because he believes that we’ve discovered something huge. It might just be the two hours of sleep I got, but I honestly want to punch the captain right now. This storm is really wearing on the captain and he’s wearing on the crew. He’s so by the book that I think he doesn’t believe it exists half the time. His way of thinking just makes no sense to me though. We’re out here to find stuff like this and he just wishes it would go away.

I mean, yeah, this goes against things we were taught, but he doesn’t even want to study it because it might be dangerous. Kano, Maki and I are the only ones making any discoveries about this thing and we’re not even supposed to know anything about the science-y stuff.

Wow I’m tired. I’m going to have words with the captain and I know I’m not the only one. I’ll be standing in line behind several science teams wanting a chance to study this.

My brain is fried. I finished those emergency plans for the captain, not that they’d be any good if something actually happened. There’s just too many variables to plan for. So what I gave him were just estimates and random simulations that I used back in school. Gotta admit it was fun to mess around with that programming again. Maybe I could get a game going with Kano. He’d have fun trying to save the Alae from asteroid fields or even electrical storms. I have enough programming skills that I could give him a pretty good challenge. I’ll make it my way to thank him for showing me how to repair my relays.

Speaking of, Kano found something interesting in the feeds from Little Wingdings. While most of the feed is just random impulses, there’s this one constant feed near the edge of the storm. It’s running with about 600,000 amps, which according to Kano is about twenty times that of a bolt of lightning. All he can figure is that it has to have a source somewhere. Hopefully we can find it in the next month before we leave the storm behind.

Speaking of storms: I had another run in with the security chief Amaya. Maki, Kano and I were playing cards in the mess hall when she came in. She kinda over heard Maki mention something about a stick in her ass. I swear it was going to turn into a cat fight, but Maki’s already on thin ice with a lot of the officers so I stepped in.

I woke up in the infirmary. Doc. Yong told me I only had a minor concussion from Amaya. One day I will find out why she’s so aggressive.

Anyways, I’m going to go lay down for a while. My head hurts.

It’s too early in the morning for this. Not that time actually exists, but this is my bunk time. Security chief Amaya was sent to get me at oh-three hundred for my evaluation. I spent a last hour showing the captain my charts and the ships full course. That’s, now, nine months of charts and paths. I also told him most of these would change as we got farther along. He then wanted me to chart emergency courses in case of some astral disaster. Asteroids, another storm, uncharted planet.

I have no idea what to do. It’s not like I can magically know how a rogue asteroid will travel, or how that gravity field will affect our ship without it actually happening and if we run into another storm like this one I’d be more willing to fly closer to get another probe in there to compare data.

I’m beginning to wonder if the captain is actually reading these. He never gives us feedback and you’d think he’d mention our possibly illegal use of Alae equipment and unauthorized experiment, or my space walks with Kano. If anything he’d at least want to know about our findings in the electrical cloud.

Whatever, I guess. The captain’s got hundreds of these to read through. I wonder what Maki’s are like.

Little Wingdings hit the cloud an hour ago. I thought the initial voltage shock was going to blow out the curcuits on the probe. Seems like Maki’s insulation did the trick though, the woman can do some amazing work when she thinks it’ll be fun. If only replacing broken relays was fun for her… Whatever, I can do a space walk every now and then. Well, Kano’s trying to teach me how to change out the relays and repair what’s wrong with them. Captain Merveille’s gonna have a fit if he catches me out there though. I have the basic training for a space walk but not for the tools to do it.

Anyways, that’s an off topic rant. So far the information being sent to us from Little Wingdings is inconsistent. Maki’s almost ready to call this a waste of time. She’s probably right but something with that much power has to have a source. Sadly all the video and image feeds are just plain white light. We figured that would happen though. All we can do right now is to continue watching the feed fromt he probe and see if the energy increases

We shot off “Little Wingdings” right before the captain’s shift started. It should reach the cloud in a couple hours. Kano picked the name and Maki didn’t really care enough to argue. Either way, Kano’s monitoring the feed so Maki and I… Well he’s monitoring the feed while doing standard maintenance and Maki has disappeared somewhere. My guess is the crew evaluation. She believes that if you can’t find a maintenance man then they’re obviously doing their job. The captain will probably skip over me as he’s been on my ass for the past couple days about my work. If I have to answer another question about spacial winds or solar electrical fluxuations. Those don’t even exist, I think the captain is just trying to make sure he understands everything. Maybe Maki’s been telling him things again.

Technobabble aside it is interesting to watch the electric cloud. It’s just sitting there with it’s constantly flashing lights or arcing energy. It’s kind of amazing, though once we’re on the other side I figure we’re going to have to recalibrate our subspace communications array to go around the cloud. Not my job but it could throw off some of my maps.

It’s been a week since my last log. The captain got a little peeved that I haven’t been keeping up with my logs. Anyways, we just left the check-in point yesterday. Won’t hit another one for three months. My job now is to make sure the ship just goes straight. This means I have a lot of free time. I spend a lot of time with Maki and her assistant Kano. Kano does more work, but Maki’s a lot of fun. Oh yeah, turns out the security chief, Amaya, is married. She also doesn’t take well to people asking her out. Maki dragged me to the medbay, nice of her. I also met the head medical officer, Yong Sung. He shoved my joints back into place real quick. Well, they were massaged back into place with one of his machines. I got this whole lecture on his hydrolic-based medical systems. I almost fell asleep when my shoulder popped back into place. I’ll admit, it hurt a lot less than it does the regular way, now it’s just a little sore.

Well,I’m off to go see if Maki has anything to help with the soreness.

We hit the electrial storm today. Merveille now has me on call 24/7. Which means he’s going to call me everytime he sees a flash of lightning. “The safety of this ship is my responsibility and to do my job, I need to make sure you’re doing yours.” Now I know actual time doesn’t exist out here. But the captain called me in at two in the morning to see if we needed to change course. He still had me check the course to see if the cloud had moved. I understand his worry, a cloud this big is unusual. Maki and I plan to throw a small sensor into it to see if there’s anything interesting inside. Maki decided it would be best if we didn’t tell the captain as we made it out of spare parts for the ship. Who knows, we might find out something interesting about it. Either that or find out what happens to metal when a few hundred million volts of electricity hits it. We’re looking forward to it. Anyways, gotta go check on the course, again.

We set out at oh-four hundred hours. I spent what I thought would be bunk time going over and rerouting our ship’s course. Command tacked on another month to the expedition due to some sort of electrical storm in Sector 83. A whole month to go around a big cloud in space. The captain’s not too happy about it, but then, I doubt anyone in the crew is too pleased. Though I don’t mind the mind the nice overtime bonus we’re going to get.

Another note, I met the Head Mechanic today. I was taking a nap at my computer when I was woken up by a woman under my desk. She crawled out with a bottle of vodka. Still, I’m not going to report her. It’s a nine month trip, if she’s got the booze, I’m going to want some. And keeping her happy ensures that I get to keep my warm water showers.

Well, I’m off to the bunk room for some serious sleep.

Log entry number one. I’ve just been transferred to the USG Alae. My first time on anything bigger than a scout ship. But here the crew count is like, two hundred anf fifty-four. My home town had a population of three hundred. I’m still in awe that I can walk down what seems like miles of corridors without hearing or seeing anyone with that number of people. So far I’ve only met the Captain. “Captain Merveille Illuminati”, I believe he’s from a really high class family from the way he talks. Interestingly, he has this long, silky white hair. He keeps it in a pony tail, but it’s weird to see someone as young as he is with snowy hair. Then again I guess green hair isn’t normal either. He also has this really fair complexion, I seriously thought he was a girl for half a second. Seems like a good guy though, I hope we get along. I also met the Security Chief, Amaya. I was not expecting anything that gorgeous to be on this ship. I’m considering asking her for a drink at the next port. Anyways, I’m off to hit my bunk. We set out in the morning. The early morning. Gonna be an eight month expedition at the shortest. Off into unexplored territory. Can’t wait to write home about it.
